Air Berlin It is the largest airline in Germany and the seventh in Europe. Based in Berlin, it operates flights within Germany and also to and from various European cities, North America, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Is conventional airline establishes a series of characteristics for checked baggage that will depend on the class in which you travel.

Below you have an index with all the points that we are going to deal with in this article.

Requirements when billing

In general, any ticket booked with Air Berlin includes a free piece of checked baggage, except if our rate is JustFly. Now, it is convenient to take into account the chosen rate when it comes to being clear about what is included and what is not in our reservation.

As we said, all reservation with Air Berlin includes one piece of checked baggage, which must not exceed 23 kg. This weight limit can be up to 32 kg if you travel in Business class. Depending on the chosen fare and the corresponding travel conditions, our ticket may include a single free piece or more:

  • JustFly rate- Does not include any piece of checked baggage. Its reservation is optional and the corresponding fee must be paid.
  • FlyDeal rate- Includes a free piece of checked baggage up to 23 kg.
  • FlyClassic rate- Includes a free piece of checked baggage up to 23 kg.
  • FlyFlex + rate- Includes two free pieces of checked baggage, each weighing a maximum of 23 kg (46 kg total).

In any case, if you do not remember or are not sure what type of rate corresponds to the ticket you have reserved, you will be able to see the amount of free checked luggage that you can take in the reservation confirmation that will be sent to you by e-mail after making the purchase .

In addition, you should know that, whatever your rate among the four listed above, all of them include several billing options: web, mobile, fast check-in at terminals or at the Air Berlin counter at the departure airport.

Children up to 11 years of age are entitled to one free piece of checked luggage up to 23 kg, except for the JustFly fare. Air Berlin also allows strollers, car seats and travel cots for babies and children to be transported free of charge.

Excess baggage

It may happen that our luggage exceeds the number of pieces allowed according to the chosen rate and / or the weight limit. In these cases, the airline will consider it as excess baggage.

In cases like this you have two options: if it is a matter of weight higher than allowed, an option if you do not want to pay the corresponding surcharge for excess luggage is to remove things from the suitcase.

On the other hand, if you need to take more things to your destination and you cannot do without any of them, so this excess baggage is inevitable, you should bear in mind that, up to 30 hours before Upon departure, you will be charged for the first additional piece of luggage up to 23 kg:

  • JustFly in short and medium distance: between € 15 and € 35.
  • FlyDeal, FlyClassic and FlyFlex + in short and medium distance: between € 70 and € 90.
  • FlyDeal, FlyClassic and FlyFlex + in long distance: € 150.
  • FlyFlex in short and medium distance: € 70.
  • Long distance FlyFlex: € 150.
  • Long distance Business Class: € 150.

It should be noted that, although children up to 11 years old are entitled to a free piece of up to 23 kg, on the other hand Air Berlin does not offer the possibility of making an additional luggage reservation for them.

In case you need to check in some type of sports or special luggage, you will have to choose this option during the flight reservation. If you could not do it at that time, it is also possible to do it later, up to 30 hours before the flight departure.

Below you will find a table with all the pieces of luggage considered special and whose transport with Air Berlin is allowed:

There are a series of objects or articles that the airline has classified as dangerous and that, therefore, cannot be transported on the plane, either as carry-on, checked or both.

In case of damage or loss

In principle, checking luggage is a simple procedure that consists in that, upon arrival at the departure airport, we go to the airline counter and hand over our suitcase to the airline staff.

Once this step is taken, our luggage will no longer be with us, so it will be responsibility from Air Berlin and it will be upon arrival at the destination airport when we can pick you up after leaving the plane.

However, there are times when our luggage, for reasons beyond our control as passengers, may suffer some damage during transportation from the airport of origin to the airport of destination. It can also happen that our checked baggage is lost, but what should be done in these cases?

You should know that Air Berlin collaborates with the Dolfi 1920 company on issues related to check-in luggage. The service of this company includes the appraisal, repair or replacement of the damaged or lost part, as well as a free collection and delivery service.

If, after getting off the plane at the destination airport, you detect any damage to your luggage, what you should do is approach the lost luggage counter (Lost & Found) local as soon as possible. If you cannot do it that same day, you can send a claim to Dolfi 1920 within 7 days.

Claims for lost luggage must be submitted in writing to the airline within a maximum period of 21 days after arrival at the destination. You will have to fill in the Claim Form that the airline has enabled on its website. You can access it through this link (available in English).

It could also happen that we find some damage to the contents of our suitcase or if something is missing. If this is your case, you must notify the airline as soon as you become aware of it, within a maximum period of 7 days from the collection of the same.
