Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian Hindu thinker, lawyer and politician known in India also as Bapu, Meaning father in guayaratí language. He was one of the great defenders of human rights. He was in charge of reducing poverty levels in India or defending the rights of women, among others. All this he did through following the principle of Satyagraha or non-violent mass civil disobedience. Although he was imprisoned on several occasions, he finally achieved his goal, that is, for India to become independent from Great Britain.
