La Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Santander it comprises two superimposed floors and a cloister with annexed rooms, all mainly Gothic in structure. In 1754 it was transformed into cathedral by Pope Benedict XIV, becoming the head of the Bishopric of Santander.

La iglesia bottom —call Parish of Christ- it was built during the first third of the XNUMXth century. It is made up of three naves with four sections and the apses at the head of the bill. It may come as a surprise how robust the pilasters and arches for vaults are so low, but it must be considered that they also support the upper church. Its decoration consists mainly of plant motifs.

La iglesia The upper floor corresponds to what was the upper floor of the original project, so its original floor plan exactly matches that of the lower floor. It was built from the middle to the end of the 1941th century and has been partially rebuilt, and expanded, after the fire suffered by the city in XNUMX. In it the presbytery stands out, which is surrounded by the ambulatory that contains two altars dedicated to Fernando III of Castile "the Saint" and to San Matías. The vaults are simple ribbed, whose slenderness is evident by the light that penetrates through the clerestory windows in the widest and highest central nave.

The complex is completed with a XNUMXth century cloister. Its naves are closed to the part of the garden by arched galleries and with slender mullions, later reinforced by robust arches. All ships have chapels, among which two stand out: that of San Pedro and that of Santiago. A good number of sepulchral bundles of abbots and knights are preserved, both from the two previous churches and from others within the jurisdiction of the city.

The schedules of the visit of the Cathedral depend on the season. In summer it opens from 11:00 to 13:00, and from 16:00 to 19:00. Sundays and holidays from 11:00 to 14:00. On Mondays it is closed.
