“Lofsöngur” (“Hymn”) or better known as Ó Guð vors lands »(“ O, God of Our Land ”) is the himno national of Iceland. It was written by Matthías Jochumsson and composed by Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson. The song was finished in 1874, when the thousandth anniversary of the first settlement on the island was celebrated.
Although it contains three stanzas, commonly only the first is sung. Many consider it difficult to sing as it requires a very high voice in certain parts. In addition, the himno focuses on the fact that Iceland it has a state church and that Christianity is the established religion.
