“Lofsöngur” (“Hymn”) or better known as Ó Guð vors lands »(“ O, God of Our Land ”) is the himno national of Iceland. It was written by Matthías Jochumsson and composed by Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson. The song was finished in 1874, when the thousandth anniversary of the first settlement on the island was celebrated.

Although it contains three stanzas, commonly only the first is sung. Many consider it difficult to sing as it requires a very high voice in certain parts. In addition, the himno focuses on the fact that Iceland it has a state church and that Christianity is the established religion.

Lofsongur

O, guð vors lands! Ó, lands vors guð!
See lofum þitt heilaga, heilaga nafn!
Úr solkerfum himnanna hnýta þér krans
þínir herskaar, tímanna safn.
Fyrir þér er einn dagur sem þúsund ar,
og þúsund ar dagur, ei meir;
eitt eilífðar smáblóm með titrandi tár,
sem tilbiður guð sinn og deyr.
Íslands þúsund ar,
Íslands þúsund ar!
eitt eilífðar smáblóm með titrandi tár,
sem tilbiður guð sinn og deyr.

Anthem

Oh God of this land! Oh, of this land Lord!
We worship Your most holy, most holy name.
All the suns impose a crown on you
Your legions are the ages of time.
Because for You one day is a thousand years,
and a thousand years, just one day
A flower of eternity that cries a tear,
Pray to your God and die.
The thousand years of Iceland!
The thousand years of Iceland!
A flower of eternity that cries a tear,
Pray to your God and die.
