In the Plaza Santa María 1, from the Old Town from the city of Barcelona, is the Church of Santa María del Mar. Also known as The Catedral del Mar o The Cathedral of the Poor. It is the Cathedral of the sailors dedicated to its patron saint, financed by the fishermen's brotherhood and built with the voluntary work of the sailors of the neighborhood.
Made by the architect Berenguer de Montagut at the beginning of the XNUMXth century. It stands out for being the only religious building made only in pure Catalan Gothic style, which makes it a true architectural gem. It has three naves, a polygonal main chapel and the usual chapels between buttresses, along the entire perimeter, and its towers are octagonal.
Among so much austerity stands out the rose window through which the light filters and which is one of the few luxury elements of the temple. The Virgin of the "Enough" –The port loaders- and the old ship that preside over the altar are a tribute to its origins.
Despite the fact that the choir and all the furniture were burned in the Civil War, its interior is of a unique beauty and its fabulous acoustics. For this reason, concerts of varied music such as classical, jazz and oriental are usually held in the temple.
It can be visited daily from 9 a.m. to 13:30 p.m. and from 16:30 p.m. to 20:00 p.m.
