In the pedestrian zone of the city of Florence is the Republic Square. It is one of the largest squares in the city and one of the most important places in it. It was always the nucleus of the city. In Roman times it was the space where the forum worked. Starting in the Middle Ages, it became the center of commerce.

After the unification of Italy, at the end of the XNUMXth century, the city was redeveloped, undergoing the same metamorphosis as other great European capitals. This is how the new Republic Square was designed, which was built collapsing the Old Market, the Fish Loggia and the Jewish Ghetto.

On its west side stands the Arch of Triumph that commemorates the election of Florence as the capital of Italy. It has a slab that says: "The old city center from secular desolation to new life restored".

Currently it is still an economic center, since it is an area of illustrious historical cafes such as the Red Jackets, where famous writers and artists of fashion and exclusive hotels have always met. Surrounded by large palaces, prestigious shops, the most famous places in the city.

In the center of the square is the Pillar of Abundance, a column from the old market topped by an XNUMXth century sculpture, as a symbol of the place where the main Roman streets crossed: Cardo and Decumano.
