At Campo dei Miracoli, lost between alleys and canals in the east of the sestiere de Cannaregio, outside the medieval walls of Venice, we found the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli (Santa Maria de los Milagros). It is the preferred church of the Venetians to marry.

This beautiful temple, an example of the Venetian Renaissance, was built at the end of the XNUMXth century, and houses the remains of Cardinal Girolamo Castaldi, who financed the work. This design by Pietro Lombardo defines, for many, the style of the Venetian Quattrocento.

It stands out especially for the curious shape of its polychrome marble façade, which they say are left over from the construction of the Basilica of San Marco. Its semicircular upper part has a central rose window surrounded by three other smaller ones and presents a large number of elegant bas-reliefs. Its shape is compared to that of a jeweler.

Inside, the colorful marbles give a peculiar chromatic effect. A large staircase leads up to the Madonna and Child, by Nocolò di Pietro, who presides over the altar. The roof, shaped like a barrel vault, is lined with coffered ceilings decorated with the faces of the prophets. The pilasters and baseboard of the nave have curious bas-reliefs of mermaids and mermen.

The church can be visited from Monday to Saturday between 10 am and 18 pm, and on Sundays from 13 pm to 17 pm. Entry costs € 2.
