Now that we are in the preparations for the Christmas holidays, Colombia is getting ready to celebrate one of the most important dates of the year. Tradition, culture and color make Colombian Christmas customs reason enough to encourage us to spend Christmas Eve in the land of good coffee.

The first days of December are a source of joy for all Colombians, since a good number of ceremonies and commemorative meetings are organized to pay tribute to the birth of the Child Jesus.

Officially, the preparation of Christmas takes place on the Night of the Candles, which takes place every December 7, on the eve of the day of the Immaculate Conception. The itinerary of these dates includes a massive meeting between families to light several candles and lanterns in front of their homes, putting together a path of lights with the sole purpose of being blessed by the Virgin.

The night of December 7 turns into a true display of lights, illuminating almost all the houses in Medellín, Cali and Bogotá with a colorful party that is complemented by fireworks displays. In addition, for many the bridge of December 8 begins.

Then will come the nine days of Novena de Aguinaldos, where hundreds of faithful congregate in the manger and the Christmas tree to raise their prayers to God, in addition to singing some Christmas carols and sharing dinner as a family. Unlike other countries and cultures, the preparation for Christmas Eve in Colombia assumes a religious role.

Finally, Christmas Eve is marked by a magical night, which coincides with the last day of the Novena. Families enjoy a hearty dinner based on meats, purees, drinks, fruits, vegetables, desserts and arepas, in addition, at midnight they deliver gifts as a gesture of affection for their loved ones.
