El Castello neighborhood It is the largest sestiere of Venice. It goes from the San Marco district to the Cannareggio district. Its name comes from the XNUMXth century fortress that was on what is now the Island of San Pietro. Until the XNUMXth century it was the religious seat of the city since the Church of the Island of Santa Elena was the cathedral of the city of Venice between the mid-XNUMXth and early XNUMXth centuries.

The Castello consists of two zones well differentiated: the commercial and liveliest area of the neighborhood is "Riva degli Schiavoni". Artists and bohemians come together especially at the Hotel Danieli, since the XNUMXth century.

Churches such as the Pietá or San Giorgio dei Greci with its crooked bell tower or San Zacaría guide us until we reach the “Arsenale”, where the shipyard that built the Venetian war fleet operated, which became one of the most powerful in Europe. There currently the Naval History Museum.

Crossing the Bridge della PagliaOn the other shore, we will see that the streets are narrower and there is peace among a large number of churches and palaces, an area of great charm to see a different Venice.

Especially highlighting a place is very difficult: the Scuola Grande di San Marco, Church of Santi Giavanni e Paolo, the old Monastery of Santa Apolonia, all are worth seeing.

Although the moment the Giardini Publici and the pavilions of the Biennale are invaded by lovers of art and architecture, during the Venice BiennaleEvery odd year is a different experience.
