Walter Ulbricht, leader of the Unified Socialist Party, ruler of the GDR (German Democratic Republic), decided to build a television tower on Alexanderplatz. It was built in 1969 as a symbol of East Berlin. From the antenna you get a panoramic view of the entire city.
